Typically, components made from high-grade aluminum or stainless steel offer excellent resistance to corrosion and wear, maintaining smooth operation over time. Additionally, the weight of the rest impacts the overall bow performance; a lighter rest helps keep the bow balanced and allows for quicker target acquisition without adding unnecessary bulk. Drop away rests automatically move out of the arrow’s path upon release, which improves arrow clearance and reduces noise, helping fast bows perform better with less interference. They typically require a bit more installation effort and occasional maintenance compared to fixed rests, which are simpler, more durable, and usually less expensive. Fixed rests maintain a steady platform but can cause contact with the arrow on release, potentially affecting accuracy and noise.
Drop away rests suit archers focused on speed and precision, while fixed rests are better for those preferring straightforward setups with minimal upkeep.
How to Care for and Maintain Drop Away Rests
Drop away rests are designed to support your arrow until you release the bowstring. To keep them working well, regular care is needed.
Clean your rest often to remove dirt and debris. Use a soft cloth or brush to gently wipe away any buildup. Avoid harsh chemicals, as these can damage the materials.
Check moving parts regularly to make sure they operate smoothly. Apply a small amount of lubricant to hinges or springs if they start to feel stiff. This helps the rest drop away quickly and quietly when you shoot.
Inspect the rest for signs of wear or damage. Look for cracks, bent parts, or loose screws. Replacing worn components will keep your rest functioning properly and prevent poor arrow flight.
Here are some tips to maintain your drop away rest:
- Keep it clean and free from dirt.
- Lubricate moving parts occasionally.
- Tighten screws if they become loose.
- Replace damaged parts immediately.
- Store your bow and rest in a dry place to avoid rust and corrosion.
By following these steps, your drop away rest can last through many seasons of shooting. Regular checks and simple maintenance not only extend its lifespan but also help keep your shots accurate and consistent.
